The American Academy of Dermatology is seeking a Public Education Content Specialist located in Schaumburg, IL. The role is responsible for developing the Academy’s public education content. Including but not limited to, its patient education pamphlets, digital handouts, and Video of the Month scripts, to educate the public and patients about skin, hair and nail conditions and the importance of seeing a board-certified dermatologist.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop print, digital and video content to educate the public and patients about skin, hair and nail conditions and the importance of seeing a board-certified dermatologist.This includes researching, analyzing, writing and editing public content, as well as coordinating physician review/approval of the content.The content should be supported by evidence and adhere to the Academy’s editorial standards.
  • Develop the Academy’s public education video content, including the Video of the Month series. Develop education content, strategies, creative concepts and scripts in conjunction with video production vendors. Oversee leadership approval, production, distribution, and analysis. Assist with integrating video into content strategy efforts and marketing campaigns.
  • Develop public education content for the Academy’s national public education, community and philanthropic programs.This includes, but is not limited to, SPOT Skin Cancer.
  • Research, develop and implement enhancements to the Academy’s patient education product line and free resources. This includes, but is not limited to, leading the content development of the Academy’s pamphlets. Ensure that the Academy’s patient education content is accurate and consistent and presented to the public in an easy to understand and graphically pleasing way. Participate as a member of the Patient Education Product Development team and share recommendations for content enhancements and gain feedback prior to implementation.
  • Work with colleagues in Creative and Publishing and Marketing to ensure consistent and accurate branding and messaging across all forms of the Academy’s written and visual communications.
  • Assist the Associate Director and the Senior Public Relations Specialist with recommending and determining appropriate strategic and financial goals that relate to the department and the overall Academy mission. Develop and implement programs to fulfill these goals. Assist in the development of the departmental budget, monitor revenue and expenses and assist with quarterly variance reports.
  • Provide overall staffing services to assigned council, committees and task forces in conjunction with the staff liaisons and chairs of these organizational groups. This includes drafting programs/strategies to be discussed and reviewed via e-mail ballot, conference call or meeting, tracking follow-ups, incorporating feedback, and assisting with developing and monitoring the committee budget.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree inCommunications, English or Journalism is preferred.
  • Minimum three to four years’ experience in the development of written and broadcast public education content. 
  • Superior writing and editorial skills with demonstrated proficiency adapting technical and medical information for lay audiences. 
  • Experience working with a wide range of internal and external audiences. 
  • Ability to develop rapport with subject matter experts. 
  • Demonstrated ability to apply effective verbal, non-verbal, and written communication methods. 
  • Must be a self-starter who can manage multiple projects with minimum supervision. 
  • Able to organize, prioritize and coordinate tasks; monitor the progress of tasks and projects; and provide follow-up to supervisor. 
  • Exceptional attention to detail. 
  • Ability to consistently complete work accurately and review/edit content developed by others to ensure that the Academy delivers consistent, error-free content.
