Description Summary:

This person provides support to Manager of Public Affairs and others on Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota’s public affairs team. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota’s public affairs team is responsible for outreach to key stakeholders and for developing integrated public affairs strategies to influence public policy and advance the organization’s mission of making a healthy difference in people’s lives.

Strong interpersonal skills are required to successfully manage multiple assignments while working closely with members of the public affairs team and the CitizenBlue advisory team. Responsibilities may include organizing events, research, writing and editing of internal communication materials, newsletter articles, letters/electronic correspondence, event communications, speeches and other communications tactics.

The person would be employed for a three-month internship, which may be extended, if appropriate, particularly during the school year. During the summer months, the intern would work fulltime (40 hours/week) and part-time (20 hours/week) during the school year. This position reports to the Manager of Public Affairs.

Accountabilities:

  1. Coordinate internal grassroots CitizenBlue activities including get-out-the vote activities, event planning and promotion. 
  2. Write articles and other communications for internal audiences as directed by Manager of Public Affairs 
  3. Assist Manager of Public Affairs in developing and distributing communication materials for CitizenBlue. 
  4. Maintain and contribute content to the CitizenBlue share point site 
  5. Work with the CitizenBlue advisory team to plan and execute candidate forums 
  6. Coordinate Blue Cross employees to serve as election judges in their community 
  7. Research health care and public policy issues and provide written summaries as directed by the Manager of Public Affairs 
  8. May include engagement with key stakeholders and coalitions on issues such as health literacy.

Requirements:

  • Ability to remain nonpartisan 
  • College student or recent college graduate, enrolled in a 4-year degree program 
  • Formal contact with college or university where student is enrolled 
  • Political Science or related major with intent to stay in a related field 
  • 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale 
  • Previous experience helpful but not necessary 
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills for working with business partners, vendors and cross-functional teams and for making formal presentations. 
  • Required to work on site during business hours 
  • Demonstrated personal computer skills and the willingness to learn in the use of a suite of software tools (such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel) and project management tools 
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills

  • Interest in health care and public policy 
  • Volunteer or community service experience
