USO Wisconsin, Inc.

USO Wisconsin is a non-profit that keeps currently serving US military connected with their family. We helped relieve stress of 70,108 participants last year through our centers and events. The home office is at the War Memorial in downtown Milwaukee.

PROGRAMS:

Operation Christmas: 400 attendees registered in 2016. Military families in need can pick out presents, children make stockings for those in need, and everyone ate and visited with Santa.

United Through Reading: USO gives book and video of deployed parent reading it to their children.

Father/Daughter Dance: Fathers reconnecting with daughters and making cherished memories with music, snacks and other activities.

Deployments, Welcome Home and Dignified Transfers: We host a room and refreshments for military and their families.

Ticket Programs: USO Wisconsin distributes tickets to military families for-- Brewers, Admirals, concerts, movies and other entertainment.

Operation Baby Shower: Lunch for military moms who don’t have extended family nearby to host baby shower. Experts provide valuable advice and moms get gift bag full of items (diapers, clothes, etc.)

CENTERS:

Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS): In 2016, supported 9,197 new recruits and their families who are dealing with the process of joining the military.

Milwaukee Airport: We supported 8,742 service members and their families in transit, deployments, welcome homes, and dignified transfers.

La Crosse Airport: Opened in 2016 to support 5,979 service members who arrive to go to Fort McCoy or other military installations.

Fort McCoy: In 2016 we support 9,775 on the training grounds to offer Wi-Fi, phones for calling home, stress relieving activities and comfort foods. We had more than 14,000 program participants in first year.

Enhance your resume and gain real-world experience in a non-profit environment. Say thank you to local military in a meaningful way by helping USO execute its mission. You can keep and use materials from any project that you work on to add to your portfolio.

This is not a paid position. We are looking for someone to start in February 2018 and stay until December 2018. 10 hours per week. We are flexibile based on your classes and schedule. You may be able to work remotely for certain projects.

USO Wisconsin has a robust donor base of corporate and individual donors as well as a widespread volunteer network. This internship will help maintain and grow this widespread network of support.

  • Develop and maintain support for existing corporate and individual donor services 
  • Identify and develop new donor resources 
  • Respond to inquiries (verbal and written) regarding services and programs 
  • Respond to grant proposal inquiries 
  • Help develop presentation and donor materials 
  • Help coordinate volunteer services 
  • Attend programs and support event coordination
  • Excellent organizational skills 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • MS Office experience (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) 
  • Database (Salesforce) / listserv experience a plus 
  • Student currently enrolled in Business, PR, Marketing, Organizational Development or related degree program 
  • Able to work 10-15 hours per week (on-site or remote) 
  • Able to work with internal and external team members 
  • Interested in learning about non-profit organization development

This is an unpaid internship. We will gladly work with your college or university to align the internship so it iseligibile for academic credit as defined by the academic institution.  We will offer projects that will give you experience that fits your career path.
