Primary Function:

The Internal Communications Strategist develops, implements, and supports proactive strategies to engage and inform Animal Humane Society staff, volunteers, board members, and other internal stakeholders. This position is part of the Brand team and collaborates closely with the Human Resources team and with senior leadership, directors, managers, and supervisors to support organizational development and promote staff and volunteer engagement.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Develop a strong understanding of the organization’s goals and values. 
  • Collaborate with colleagues and leadership to develop and implement a robust, integrated internal communications strategy. 
  • Serve a gatekeeper for content, volume, tone and flow of internal information, reinforcing communications across channels (huddles, meetings, newsletter, websites) in a coordinated, impactful way. 
  • Manage content strategy, calendar, editing, and production of newsletters for AHS staff, volunteers, and other internal stakeholders. 
  • Manage production and content development for site meetings and major staff events, including the creation of slides and supporting materials. 
  • Manage and develop content for Fetch, the AHS intranet. Work with colleagues to identify and implement new content and functionality. 
  • Support employee recognition programs, including annual awards and the employee wall. 
  • Craft internal communications plans. Write and edit internal messages and talking points. Create and edit internal presentations. Develop content for newsletters, internal websites and email communications. 
  • Continually evaluate the success of internal communications, working with a broad range of stakeholders. 
  • Collaborate with colleagues to identify and support opportunities for employee and volunteer engagement. 
  • Advocate the critical business importance of internal communication and support the consistent use of the brand. 
  • Act as a leader in the organization, bringing ideas, energy, and structure to the team. 
  • Contribute to other communications projects and organizational initiatives as assigned.

Qualifications Required:

  • Degree in public relations, communications, or related field. 
  • Three to five years related experience in internal or strategic communications, ideally in a nonprofit environment. 
  • Persuasive and strategic communicator with excellent interpersonal and written communication skills. Exceptional editor and proofreader. 
  • Collaborative work style; able to facilitate among diverse communities and individuals. Able to resolve conflict when key stakeholders having differing points of view. 
  • Proactive, reliable, responsible and accurate with an attention to detail. 
  • Self-motivated, results-oriented, goal-focused. 
  • Exceptional project management skills. Able to anticipate challenges, manage stressful situations in a fluid and fast-paced environment, and quickly implement course corrections when necessary. 
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with MS Office. Expertise with content management systems, email marketing tools, and presentation software preferred. 
  • Ability to provide direct, honest counsel and feedback. 
  • Integrity, independent thinking, and personal courage.
