Marcus Promotions is the publisher of Footlights, the playbill-of-choice for countless performing arts organizations in the region, serving companies of all sizes, including Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Skylight Music Theatre, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Next Act Theatre, Renaissance Theaterworks, In Tandem Theatre, as well as countless music groups and local college and universities’ dance, music, and theatre programs. Footlights extends playbill services to Chicago, Madison, Milwaukee, and many locations in between. Footlights also has an online counterpart, Footlights.com, and in 2017 introduced the Footlights Performing Arts Awards for Greater Milwaukee as a way to celebrate and recognize the performing arts in Southeastern Wisconsin.

The Editor and Digital Communications Manager reports to the President and Publisher, and is responsible for copywriting, writing, editing, and communication tasks with regards to: interviewing and writing articles (both online and in print), compiling event listings (both online and in print), website and social media management, email newsletter campaigns, providing copy for marketing resources, and general marketing initiatives.

The Editor and Digital Communications Manager is also expected to be heavily involved with the planning and producing of the Footlights Performing Arts Awards.

Editor and Copywriter (40%)

  • Be managing editor for Chicago/Madison/Milwaukee/High School Footlights (16 issues annually) 
  • Be managing editor for online content at Footlights.com and MarcusPromotions.com 
  • Create original, engaging content using a regular publishing schedule in conjunction with a promotional calendar 
  • Schedule and conduct in-person interviews to develop engaging content for publications 
  • Manage freelancers in Chicago 
  • Participate in regular planning for printed and online media 
  • Brainstorm and research unique editorial ideas for issues and online 
  • Compile, write, edit, and proofread event listings for issues 

Digital and Website Content Management (30%)

  • Writing, editing, and proofreading site content 
  • Overall basic site management and administration 
  • Create email marketing and email newsletter campaigns 

Social Media and Marketing Management (20%)

  • Manage Facebook, Twitter, and other social media pages 
  • Implement a content editorial calendar to manage content and plan specific, timely campaigns 
  • Design, create and manage promotions and social ad campaigns 

Footlights Performing Arts Awards (10%)

  • Serve on the Footlights Performing Arts Awards planning committee, attending weekly meetings
  • Assist with the overall management of a 400+ person event

Requirements:

  • 3+ years writing and editing experience required
  • 2+ years in a management position recommended
  • Fluent in both AP and Chicago Styles
  • Excellent handle on grammar rules and spelling
  • Proficient in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop
  • Intermediate skill set in Microsoft Office Suite programs Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Basic knowledge of HTML and website content management systems
  • Familiarity with Umbraco (our website platform) a plus
  • Knowledge of Salesforce.com preferred
  • Knowledge of Google Analytics preferred
  • Proficiency in Google Drive a must
  • Comfortable with current social media platforms Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Google + 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or Theatre-Arts Administration or degree in related field preferred
  • Background in theatre and/or connections to current theatre community in Milwaukee strongly preferred 
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends is required for this position. Some regional travel necessary.
