POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the VP, Destination Branding & Strategy, the Director of Public Relations & Communications will set and guide the strategy for all communications, social media, and public relations messaging and collateral to consistently articulate Meet Minneapolis’ mission, Minneapolis Convention Center brand identity and Minneapolis, City by Nature brand identity. The Director of Public Relations & Communications will ensure that Meet Minneapolis is viewed as the primary source, disseminator, and conduit of information among our diverse and extensive constituent communities.

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leads Senior Public Relations & Communications Manager 
  • Leads Social Media Manager 
  • Leads Industry Public Relations & Communications Manager 
  • Provides guidance to the Marketing and Public Relations Associate, as needed 
  • Is a member of the Meet Minneapolis Leadership Team 
  • The Director of Public Relations & Communications will work closely with the Meet Minneapolis Executive team & Public Affairs team to partner on a variety of strategic initiatives.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Earned Media / Public Relations

  • Research, set and administer departmental goals to ensure that Meet Minneapolis’ mission and objectives are achieved; develop and maintain departmental budget; oversee departmental policies and procedures, including hiring and mentoring; provide regular reports for internal and external stakeholders
  • With Senior Public Relations and Communications Manager, plan, develop, coordinate, measure and evaluate long-rate and short-term media relation plans across mediums and local, regional, national and international media. Including proactive media outreach, media research tours, managing departmental assets and vendor contracts.

Industry/Corporate Communications

  • With the SVP of Public Affairs, VP of Destination Branding and Strategy and Industry Public Relations and Communications manager, identify, develop, execute, and manage organizational communications plan
  • Oversee development and execution of communications strategy around the long-term Destination Transformation 2030 plan
  • With Director of Sales and Marketing at the Minneapolis Convention Center, the SVP of Destination Sales and Industry Public Relations and Communications manager, oversee development and execution of communications strategy for Minneapolis Convention Center and the meetings media
  • Oversee local relationships with government, industry and corporate strategic partners
  • Maintain relationships with local media, particularly journalists focusing on hospitality, tourism, economic development and business.
  • Guide the Industry Public Relations and Communications Manager on establishing organizational talking points, speeches and video scripting for Meet Minneapolis leadership or key partners

Sales and Marketing Initiatives

  • Write and/or review content for sales and marketing collateral, including but not limited to brochures, website content, sales collateral and direct mail.
  • Work closely with Director of Partnership Marketing, Director of Brand Strategy and Director of Minneapolis Visitor Information to ensure cohesion with messaging, brand voice and objectives across channels with tailoring toward targeted audiences
  • Alongside the Director of Brand Strategy and Social Media Manager, assist in the development of the social media strategy across channels and handles including identification, development, execution and content management.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with major course work in communications, public relations, or related field
  • A minimum of 7 years of public relations experience, including leading a team of public relations/media relations professionals, ideally with destination, attraction or brand public relations
  • At least 2 years web and/or digital experience; preferred (not required); Basic knowledge of HTML, SEO, Google Analytics and web master tools.
  • Must have valid driver’s license

ESSENTIAL SKILLS REQUIRED:

Writing & Editing

  • Articulate messages using appropriate grammar, usage and vocabulary;
  • Produce creative, persuasive, consistent, results-driven, long- and short-format copy for a variety of audiences for use on web and in print;
  • Attention to detail and proofreading.

Organization

  • Prioritize tasks and organize workload for efficient time-management;
  • Detail-oriented: Meet multiple-scheduled deadlines on time (possibly working late hours and/or weekends as needed);

Computer Knowledge

  • Must be proficient in Mac and/or PC computers; Microsoft Office
  • Must have intermediate knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite; HTML, Google Analytics and Web Master Tools; Email Distribution Programs; Social Media Channels

SALARY:

Competitive to similar positions within fellow Destination Management Organizations based on data provided by Destination Marketing Associations International; DOE.
