The College of Letters & Sciences (L&S) Career and Internship Center will re-envision and transform the ways in which L&S prepares its undergraduates for life-long success. With a 90% job and graduate school placement rate, L&S students are highly competitive. As our center grows, we plan to build out a new marketing and communications arm to strategically communicate to our stakeholders and market our services in creative ways to students.

The role of the Director of Marketing and Communications is four-fold:

1) to build an efficient and effective communications unit that supports Advising and Career Communities, Career Education, Internship and Employer Services and the Executive Director;

2) to complete our rebranding process, integrating our brand into all communications and campaigns;

3) to develop and implement strategic communications plans that support organizational goals; and 4) to create and execute creative campaigns with the purpose of increase engagement by key stakeholders, especially L&S undergraduates.

40% Communication Strategy

  • Direct communication strategy, including general promotions, press releases, year-end reporting, etc. consistent with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Develop print and digital strategies to meet the needs of the Internship and Employer Services, Advising and Career Communities, Career Education, and Operations teams as well as the Executive Director.
  • Identify and implement key communication objectives to fit the organization's annual strategic plan.
  • Create and maintain annual communication schedules that reflect office initiatives, events, programs, and general offerings.
  • Meet regularly with the Leadership Team to identify communication needs and appropriate channels to deliver messaging to the appropriate audiences.
  • Assist student advising team in developing strategies for engaging interest groups.
  • Ensure consistency in voice and messaging across all communication channels.
  • Assess communication efforts for effectiveness and identify new trends and opportunities to connect with intended audiences.
  • Research and stay current on communication trends and maintain updated knowledge of social media platforms.
  • Create communication strategies for academic departments, including email newsletter campaigns, maintenance of the faculty/staff section on the website, and targeted campaigns to increase awareness and build relationships within the College.
  • Ensure that the L&S Career and Internship Center's communications align with university and college requirements.

30% Content Development

  • Create tailored messaging to deliver content to L&S students, alumni, academic departments, employers, and parents.
  • Leveraging center staff and partners, solicit content for student-facing contributions, editing as needed for tone and voice.
  • Contribute content to website, email newsletters, social media, student newspapers, Wisconsin State Journal, L&S Annual Review, etc.
  • Contribute to communications packages for specific events and programs.
  • Oversee and contribute to the maintenance of web content.
  • Collaborate with Director of Employer Development on creating brand packages for employer partners.

30% Communications Team and Unit Leadership

  • As part of the Leadership Team, create long- and short-term goals for the center and serve in an advisory capacity to the Executive Director.
  • Oversee and develop the communications unit, defining scope of work, long- and short-term goals, and deadlines.
  • Oversee communications policies for the center.
  • Select, hire, train, and supervise professional communications staff and student marketing and graphic design interns. Ensure that staff duties are completed in a timely manner and meet expectations.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations with professional staff to assess progress and set development goals
  • Collaborate with L&S Office of Advancement, the WFAA, and University Marketing and Communications to reach external audiences and meet annual objectives.
  • Identify new opportunities for collaboration and partnerships with other organizations on campus and in the community.
  • Handle media inquiries and direct media to appropriate staff person for interviews.
  • Serve as point person for communications-related activities and partnerships with external agencies.
  • Attend campus communication meetings and assigned college or campus committees as necessary and appropriate.
  • Attend regular staff and leadership team meetings and participate in staff retreats.

A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, or related field.

Candidates must posses the following skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in content development that effectively communicates organizational brand and message.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with various digital and print communication channels.
  • Experience organizing and managing multiple priorities, programs, and projects both independently and in a team.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with numerous stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds and identities, including corporate representatives and executives, non-profit and government professionals, alumni, career center staff, department faculty and staff, campus partners, and students.

Sucessful Candidates will be able to demonstrate one or more of these preferred skills or experience:

  • Ability to articulate and enthusiastically promote the value of a liberal arts and sciences degree at the UW-Madison to a variety of audiences.
  • Prior work experience in communications and public relations for a university unit.
  • Experience communicating to a variety of audiences and stakeholders with different needs, but especially with college students.
  • Experience developing a comprehensive communication strategy.
  • Experience leading a rebranding effort.
  • Advancement or development experience.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, with a strong work ethic and self-starter attitude.
  • Flexibility and willingness to adapt to emerging priorities as they connect to the overall mission of the office.

Minimum $43,433 ANNUAL (12 months) Depending on Qualifications.
