POSITION SUMMARY:

The communications specialist assists in the creation of written content including news releases, the college’s website, new media/social media channels, and internal communication channels. This position possesses an ability to write quickly and well, can juggle multiple high-priority projects, and understands the fundamentals of successful digital and social media strategy. This position reports to the Director of Communications and External Relations.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Create compelling social media content with an emphasis in photos and videography that generates conversations through posts, tweets, status updates, pins, etc. and further grows engagement on college social media channels.

2. Research, write and edit news releases, feature stories, and other internal and external communications pieces, and work with division counterparts on campus publications, including the college’s magazine, as well as create content for the college’s website

3. Write stories for the college’s internal online newsletter.

4. Serve as an ambassador for the college at internal and external events and attend institutional meetings per the director.

5. Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism or related field.

2. Demonstrated knowledge in writing and editing for print and for the web.

3. Comprehensive knowledge and proficiency of the English language and knowledge of AP style.

4. Strong personal computer skills with working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, MS Word, and Outlook.

5. Strong organizational and communication skills as well as the ability to meet deadlines.

6. Ability to work closely with multiple constituents, including faculty, students, staff alumni, and community representatives.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Community college experience and knowledge of higher education issues.

2. Familiarity with strategic use of social media.

3. Familiarity with Adobe Premiere.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1. Normal office physical demands.

2. Ability to travel between campus locations and to and from community events.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Duties are performed indoors in the usual office and/or outdoor environment.
