This position is responsible for creating content, developing, and implementing communications strategies that strengthen Wauwatosa's presence in the community, building awareness of programs and resources, and increasing transparency in government operations. This position maintains positive relationships and provides responsive, accurate, and timely information relating to topics of public interest such as construction updates, public notices, annual reports, strategic communications and emergency information.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Develops content for and systematically updates communications via the city website, social media, newsletters, e-newsletters, videography, and other means to ensure public and internal awareness and understanding of key City initiatives, current projects and events.
  • Assists in developing and implementing the communication strategic plan.
  • Coordinates use of social media with department representatives to enhance citywide consistency. In collaboration with city departments, serves as a central point person for content on the City's website. Authors and publishes content for various city departments and provides guidance on best practice for web writing.
  • Writes and edits press releases, newsletter articles, website content, social media posts, presentation information to committees and Common Council. Assesses, develops, recommends and implements programs that will enhance the City of Wauwatosa's profile, social media imprint, and reputation.
  • Develops content for print materials, correspondence, reports, advertising and news releases for mass distribution; and drafts articles, reports, and content in other mediums on the status of major initiatives for distribution to Council, the public, staff and community stakeholders.
  • Attends and presents at public meetings on critical city projects and topics. Provides guidance on format and presentation material for public meetings to maximize government transparency.
  • Produces video content and performs graphic design work. Oversees cable access channel, including serving as direct supervisor of cable access channel staff.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Public Administration, Government Affairs or a related field.

Additional Qualifications:

  • 2-4 years of related experience preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively under tight deadlines and manage projects independently.
  • Superior communication skills, including communication planning, research, social media, writing, and editing.

The City of Wauwatosa reserves the right to utilize equivalencies where deemed appropriate with regard to education and experience requirements and may consider combinations of education and experience likely to lead to success with essential duties and responsibilities.

The starting pay for this position ranges from $51,064 to $58,356 annually, depending on experience and qualifications. Further increases to the top of the range, $70,028 will be based on performance.
