The Communications Specialist will report to the National Director of Mission Distinction, and will directly support programs focused on better serving uninsured and underserved Americans by increasing their access to services that help improve health outcomes. The Communications Specialist must understand how to drive complex business processes throughout and across a matrix organization, and will be expected to coordinate local partners, events, and media. You’ll be working alongside local and national communications and social responsibility teams to drive these reputation programs to success. In doing so, you’ll support new means for reporting, evaluating and measuring our impact. Additionally, you’ll work across the organization and our lines of business to create content and materials that drive UnitedHealthcare’s reputation as a result of this work.

The Communications Specialist is responsible for providing project management and broader support that enables the Mission Distinction leadership team to deliver externally and internally on social investment programs and strategies. This level of involvement can range from leading the management of a comprehensive project plan to conducting market research on social investment strategies and broader corporate social responsibility and communications initiatives.

Phenomenal communication and organizational skills make a strong communications specialist. Experience in corporate communications and project management are important qualities too.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Helps to develop effective corporate social responsibility and communication strategies 
  • Works directly with and actively supports the National Director to ensure the success of the overall national initiative 
  • Prepares and coordinates resources and materials for critical internal and external meetings 
  • Performs stakeholder analysis, and defines overall communication strategies based on identified needs and local partnerships 
  • Ensures the project status, issues and successes are communicated to the team and National Director Organizes initiatives and helps to plan local engagement events 
  • Fosters relationships with advocates and key persons, and leads discussions with internal and external key stakeholders 
  • Collaborates with communications and corporate social responsibility stakeholders to help define communications planning needs and preferences 
  • Researches and understands the evolving needs of the underserved and the organizations that are working to help those populations 
  • Understands business dynamics, cycles, products and communications initiatives and helps identify, prioritize and execute content initiatives

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) 
  • 2+ years of experience in project management 
  • 1+ years of experience in a matrix organization or in working with matrix organizations 
  • 2+ years of experience building relationships with internal and external stakeholders 
  • 2+ years of experience in the healthcare or insurance industry 
  • Proficiency within Microsoft Word (ability to create and edit documents)
  • Proficiency within Microsoft Excel (ability to filter, sort, create and edit spreadsheets) 
  • Proficiency within Microsoft PowerPoint (ability to create and edit decks) 
  • Proficiency within Microsoft Project (ability create and edit project plans)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with social responsibility program measurements and metrics
