Position Overview:

The Shared-Use Mobility Center (SUMC) seeks a Communications and Public Affairs Director to coordinate the organization’s overall communications strategy. This person will report to the Executive Director and will be part of the management team. They will work collaboratively with senior leadership to develop and implement communication strategies to broaden the impact of the Shared-Use Mobility Center’s programs and oversee organizational messaging. The SUMC’s media impact mirrors its national collaborations with government, business, community organizations, and academia. The ideal candidate is a self-starter, highly organized, has excellent verbal and written skills and has a proven track record of managing communications within the transportation or urban policy sectors.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the CEO and senior leadership to develop communications strategies that will broaden programmatic reach and deepen impact 
  • Develop and refine SUMC’s “core” messages to ensure organizational consistency 
  • Identify significant media and public policy issues that can be leveraged to support SUMC’s work, and create and implement plans to leverage them 
  • Push out messages based on SUMC original research and position papers 
  • Serve as executive editor for the organization’s website, weekly news releases and blog posts 
  • Oversee organizational response to inquiries about SUMC 
  • Oversee social media strategy
  • Serve as executive editor of all reports, proposals and white papers developed internally 
  • Coordinate with graphic designers and photographers as needed for report production 
  • Manage Communications Associate

Qualifications:

  • Significant communications and media relations experience, preferably in urban affairs, transportation, or environmental issues 
  • A strong track record of positioning an organization to achieve tangible outcomes in a competitive communications environment 
  • Ability to support senior leaders as spokespersons and presenters 
  • Excellent writing and editing skills 
  • Experience with social media, blogs and website management
