The TEMPO Milwaukee Communication and Events Intern is a college junior or senior pursuing a degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing or a related field. The right candidate has sharp writing skills, excellent organizational skills with a strong desire to learn the ins and outs of a small nonprofit organization. This individual can juggle multiple projects and deadlines under the supervision and direction of the Program Development Manager. The Communication and Events Intern is hands-on, enjoys working independently and is excited to take the lead on various communications and event planning activities. With excellent communication skills and a professional presence, s/he welcomes the opportunity to interact with TEMPO Milwaukee members and the public via phone, e-mail and in-person. The candidate must have some availability during regular offices hours (8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and during events that occur outside of these hours as agreed upon (morning and evening).

The internship runs September 2017 through December 2017 with the opportunity to extend it into the spring semester.

  • Develop content and execute the social media calendar for the organization’s Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn channels. 
  • Lead social media efforts during events (i.e. live tweeting, photo albums). 
  • Assist with the planning and execution of various events held throughout the year, which range in attendance from 15 to 500 people. 
  • Serve as the primary contact for online event registrations. 
  • Specifically, lead event prep, set-up, registration table and tear-down for monthly program meetings, quarterly professional development series, and Women’s Affinity Alliance programs. 
  • Update external website content and internal member database as needed. 
  • Media monitoring and clipping. 
  • Administrative tasks including purchasing, accounts payable, directing or responding to general phone and e-mail inquiries, appointment and meeting scheduling, mail merges, etc.
  • Draft communications pieces (i.e. newsletters, e-mails, press releases, surveys). 
  • Assist the President & CEO as needed on ad hoc projects.
  • Additional tasks tailored to the candidate’s interests and professional development goals (i.e. graphic design, journalism, fundraising) can be discussed.
  • Enrolled in junior- or senior-year of college with completed coursework in communications, public relations, jorunalism, marketing or a related field.
  • Prior internship experience is a plus.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills. 
  • Professional/polished demeanor.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) 
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects while meeting deadlines. 
  • Attention to detail and high standards for producing accurate and quality work. 
  • Experience with Illustrator and/or InDesign a plus but not required. 
  • Interest working in a small office environment where a dynamic, problem-solver, motivated personality is required. 
  • Availability during regular office hours (8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays as well as at events outside of these hours as agreed upon (morning and evening). 
  • We will work with the intern to set a schedule and divide up the 15 hours each week. 
  • $10/hour
  • We can work with the candidate’s educational institution for college credit if applicable.
