The Executive Speech and Content Writer leverages writing expertise, business acumen and interpersonal skills to write and deliver communications that drive audience engagement and are integrated with the business strategies and objectives for UnitedHealthcare and its lines of business’ which serve a combined 46 million members. This position will also work closely with various team members on multi-media content development. This role reports to the head of internal communications for UnitedHealthcare.

This position requires a strategic thinker with experience working in a matrixed organization. This role requires expert writing skills, and the ability to develop relationships with teams and leaders throughout the company.

Responsibilities include researching topics and writing communications for senior leadership and working with teams throughout the organization.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop executive speeches, presentations and key messages for internal and external events, conferences, and meetings 
  • Provide recommendations on how to influence audience perceptions and behaviors 
  • Distill complicated, technical messages into consumer friendly language, writing in a variety of voices, including persuasive informative and personal 
  • Research current trends related to news, health care, politics, technology for application to writing projects 
  • Monitor best practices in executive communications for application to work with enterprise 
  • Develop communications content, tailored to the specific medium and audience requirements (e.g., speeches, scripts, talking points, web sites, briefing packets, preparation materials, backgrounders) 
  • Adhere to applicable internal and external communications standards established for the business (e.g., style guides, communications industry standards, etc.) 
  • Adapt writing style / tone to meet the needs of the specific message / audience / channel (e.g., nuance, complexity) 
  • Obtain review of communications content by internal stakeholders to ensure compliance with applicable requirements (e.g., Legal, Clinical, Compliance) 
  • Manage review / revision / approval processes to ensure achievement of communications and business goals / objectives 
  • Monitor feedback on communications content and address questions / concerns as appropriate (e.g., follow-up) 
  • Manage / maintain communications content using established communications standards / guidelines (e.g., review cycles, sunsetting / archiving processes) 
  • Ensure work is original and within the rules, regulations, guidelines and other copyright laws 
  • Embody and promote UHG corporate values and ethics, and demonstrate a passion for our mission

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree 
  • 5+ years of experience as scriptwriter or speechwriter at a senior level 
  • 10 years of internal / external communications experience within a matrix organization 
  • Project or Program management experience 
  • 10 years of experience with intranets 
  • 5 years social media experience (i.e., blogs, pod casting, etc.) 
  • Proficiency with full suite of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint 
  • Experience translating technical and scientific information into layman's terms 
  • Track record of producing high-quality, crisp presentations for senior leaders 
  • Demonstrated excellence in all forms of communication channels, including verbal, written, and presentation 
  • Ability to influence and engage audiences using a variety of creative channels 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with highly confidential information 
  • Experience guiding designers in support of visual storytelling 
  • Exemplary organizational skills and attention to detail in a deadline-driven environment 
  • Experience with the development of content for multiple channels 
  • Experience in researching breadth of business-related topics 
  • Advanced communication development, proofreading, editing, and project management 
  • Superb writing and editing skills and mastery of AP style and grammar samples 
  • A collaborative, consultative approach 
  • An uncompromising eye for quality and detail 
  • Candidate must be able to provide writing samples

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Healthcare experience, Health Plan or Provider side
