The Milwaukee Catholic Herald newspaper is looking for a talented Associate Editor to join our office team. The Milwaukee Catholic Herald publishes a newly-redesigned, weekly newspaper, an annual Pastoral Handbook, as well as a soon-to-be online form of the publication. The mission of these communications is to be a trusted, main source for local information, inspiration and formation for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and the Catholic Church in southeastern Wisconsin.

Are we looking for you? We are looking for an Associate Editor who is extremely organized, who can build relationships and who understands the importance of keeping information local and personal to the audience who reads it. We are looking for someone who is creative, who likes to write, who has new ideas, who likes to proof and edit solo, as well as work together as a team to create a product that works. We are looking for a relationship-builder who likes to learn, someone who is willing to work some late nights, some weekends, and who is always searching for the perfect story. A hunger for the power of the press, a passion for the mission.

The Associate Editor position’s scope of work will include the following:

  • Define objectives and goals for issue development and delivery. 
  • Provide great attention to detail and is able to make quick decisions. 
  • Communicate clearly and with considerable diplomacy when interacting with writers and other editors. 
  • Ability to manage many different tasks at once. 
  • Enforce deadlines and oversee production details of publication. 
  • Plan the organization of content within the issue: features, photos, cutlines, bylines, bios, etc. 
  • Review and editing of issue content. 
  • Command of the English language, including a firm grasp of spelling, grammar, and punctuation rules. 
  • Ensure timely development and delivery of stories and related materials; managing content-related tasks and deadlines on assignment process. 
  • Complete thoughtful review of issue content, artwork, designs, and other related materials. 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with writers and assigned story locations within the archdiocese. 
  • Research questions regarding Catholic language, theology and proper name usage in content used. 
  • Coordinate timely receipt of agreements, contracts, and proper photo permissions regarding content. 
  • Conduct editorial staff meetings and attend communication department meetings on a weekly basis. 
  • Attend occasional conferences and meetings around the archdiocese to enhance relationships and build knowledge. 
  • Knowledge of tracking budget development and advertising team sales through the Business Manager. 
  • Understanding of AP style writing and grammatical usage.

This position requires:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism or English. 
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience and/or mix of experience and education. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in developmental editing and project analysis. 
  • Excellent communication, editing and writing skills. 
  • Excellent research, data analysis, and multi-project management skills. 
  • Proficiency in computer operation and Microsoft Office Suite programs; some graphics experience useful but not required. 
  • Professional demeanor and cooperative approach to work in an office environment.
