Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Communications Director and Graphic Designer, the Communications-Graphic Design Intern will work on various communications projects for the Forest Preserve District of Cook County (“District”) including, but not limited to designing various print collateral including brochures, rack cards and signage, organization of contest entries for the calendar photo contest, taking event photos and creating web/social media graphics. This is a seasonal position for up to twenty-four hours per week; the duration of this position is up to six months.

Typical Duties:

  • Provides support to the Communications division of the Office of the General Superintendent 
  • Designs print collateral, signage and web/social media graphics while following branding guidelines 
  • Maintains and updates databases and spreadsheets, including distribution lists and contest entries 
  • Organizes and tags event photos; 
  • Takes photos at Forest Preserves activities and events 
  • Selects photos for use on monthly newsletter, web site, social media and printed materials 
  • Receives direction from several sources and prioritizes assignments effectively 
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required or assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in graphic design, visual communication or substantially similar discipline from an accredited college or university; OR Must be currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree or higher and have a minimum of 30 credit hours of class instruction in graphic design, visual communication or a substantially similar discipline at an accredited college or university. You are required to upload a transcript with your online application. 
  • Must be a current Cook County resident. 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS:

Submit an online application and upload a pdf file or url to online portfolio site showing relevant design work. Submissions can be class assignments or professional design work.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:

  • Proficient knowledge of InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. 
  • Knowledge of typography, color usage and visual hierarchy. This knowledge should be demonstrated on submitted design projects. 
  • Ability to follow branding guidelines when designing collateral. 
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends, for up to 24 hours per week. 
  • Ability to travel to work assignments throughout Cook County via own means of transportation. 
  • Ability to proofread and copy/edit as needed. 
  • Eagerness to learn. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of District information. 
  • Ability to initiate and follow through with projects under a tight deadline structure.
