Role synopsis:

The Internal Communications Manager, Downstream will be responsible for developing and managing the communications plans, strategy and execution for Chicago- and Naperville-based Fuels, North America businesses and functions, including Refining Technology and Engineering (RTE), U.S. Pipelines and Logistics (USPL), Supply and Fuels, North America functions.

The role will be critical to ensuring that the businesses deliver messages that are aligned with BP America and Segment and Group Communications. The individual will support overall message consistency and effectiveness to ensure that the employee population understands the business objectives.

He/she will work as a part of the U.S. Communications and External Affairs (C&EA) organization. The individual will support the businesses and leadership teams in building and implementing effective communications plans. The individual will leverage a variety of channels and employ associated metrics in support of an engaged and committed workforce.

As a result of the communications manager’s work, employees at all levels will have an understanding of the business strategy and the role they play in supporting it, making informed business decisions based on their understanding of context, priorities and boundaries.

The Internal Communications Manager will be expected to develop effective working relationships with the C&EA team in the U.S. and the downstream communications team globally, as well as other key internal stakeholders to deliver targeted messages through a variety of channels.

Key accountabilities:

  • Understand the business strategies and objectives for Chicago- and Naperville-based Fuels, North America businesses, including RTE, USPL, Supply and Fuels, North America functions. 
  • Develop a detailed communications plan with clear messages for each of the businesses that connects the strategy and messages to communications tactics. Leverage appropriate channels to reach audiences with clear metrics in place to gauge effectiveness. 
  • This role will require significant leadership presence and the ability to juggle multiple requests from key stakeholders. The individual will be expected to deliver and advise on the ongoing communications requirements of respective leadership teams and the broader business, including redirecting requests that are outside of the scope of internal communications. 
  • Work closely with the U.S. and global communications leads for the fuels business to adopt and implement the segment internal communications strategic and operating frameworks and standards to ensure the effective and consistent delivery of internal communications. 
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the U.S. internal communications organization for consistent and efficient communications and work processes. 
  • Serve as a member of the emergency response team, with rotating responsibility to be on call and work during a crisis response. Manage communications for strategically sensitive issues.

Essential Education:

  • Undergraduate degree in communications, journalism or related field preferred.

Essential experience and job requirements:

  • 3-7 years broad Communication experience covering strategy, planning, content creation, delivery and measurement with extensive practical experience in internal communications. 
  • Strong track record of written communication and proven experience in channel strategy and management. 
  • Demonstrated skills working with leadership. 
  • Demonstrated capability working in a matrix environment with strong track record of building and managing relationships.

Desirable criteria & qualifications:

  • Agency experience – or experience working with multiple clients – preferred. 
  • Exposure to media relations preferred.
